Backyard Bounty all-Tasmanian Vegie box: 7th September

We’re always pleased when we can use home-grown produce in our boxes – this week we’ve got home-grown rhubarb from subscriber Yoram in the $40 boxes and a super-haul (30kg!) of cumquats from Liz in Margate, so many that we were actually able to spread them out across all the $30 boxes (and still had a few more to share with Straight up Bakers after the pack!). Picking cumquats is a fiddly business – even picking ten kilos from our neighbour’s tree was a pretty big process when I did it the other day – so we’re very grateful to Liz for all her hard work.

Kale – from Joua and Kou at Richmond Farm – makes a welcome return this week, after a bit of a gap between plantings due to the unpredictable weather, and we also have a range of certified organic greens from York Town Organics (mizuna, rocket, mixed salad and tatsoi) spread across the $20, $30 and $40 boxes.

“Winter” root veg are starting to wind-up – this may be the last week of Kylie’s delicious swede, and parsnips will also finish up this month, whilst loose carrots are still a couple of months away. $20s and $40s receive a bag of certified organic quinoa from Kindred Organics – this can be cooked using the absorption method like rice (although ideally with slightly less water) and makes a great base for salads – especially coupled with the old-school curly parsley from Dendra in boxes this week.
