This week’s boxes feature two brassica – wombok from Dendra Market Gardens and broccoletti from Grown for Taste. Brassica are a family of vegetables (also including cauliflower, broccoli and kale) that have a savoury, mustardy flavour and whilst they can be grown all year, they are at their best (and are less prone to damaging pests) during the cooler months. Cauliflower in particular suffer a lot from over-exposure to the sun – in times gone by growers had to actually tie up the leaves surrounding the head to limit sun exposure, but these days varieties have been developed that have leaves that grow around the “curd” (the white part) without needing to be trained to do so. Southern Fields – our Forcett grower of cauliflower and broccoli – have let us know this week that cauliflower will be available from next week, and broccoli will also soon be available, which is great news!
