As the rest of Australia moves into Autumn, today it feels a bit like Tasmania might finally be ready for summer!
This week $30 and $40 boxes have summery basil, eggplant, corn, zucchini and red onion – and while the mainland is suffering through rubbery Shepard avocados, we’ve got buttery and delicious Hass avocadoes from Avoland in the north west. Red onion and avo are two of the four essential ingredients for the perfect guacamole – finely slice red onion, rub it with salt and squeeze over a little lime juice, rest the onion in the salt and lime for a while, then stir it through mashed avo (or if you’re feeling a little fancy, try whipping the avo in a stand mixer for a super fluffy texture).
The fruit season is starting to move into autumn though; Tru Blu have picked their last blueberries for the season this week, and both apples and pears are kicking off. Lucaston Park Orchards feature heavily in this week’s fruit offerings, with plums, pears and crunchy Fuji Apples – whilst if you drive through Cygnet you’ll see Jennings strawberries keeping warm on a bed of black plastic, Lucaston’s Fuji apples just off the Huon Highway near Grove actually have reflective material laid under the trees to ensure they develop their rich red colour.
