Backyard Bounty all-Tasmanian Vegie box: 15th November

Last season Grown for Taste planted and grew a range of whole-head lettuces not commercially available in Tasmania for us, and we’re pleased that they’ll be doing this again for us this year! These softer lettuce types (as opposed to crisp types like cos) need to either be used quickly or looked after – we find the best way to make sure they keep is to cut the root end off (removing any internal core) and then put the leaves in an airtight container in the fridge. $30 boxes also feature baby leek bunches from Grown for Taste, and their broccoletti features in $20 boxes.

Sadly button mushrooms – included this week in $30 boxes – will no longer be grown commercially in Tasmania when the Spreyton Mushroom Farm, owned by the Costa group, closes soon. We’ll keep an eye out to see if any other growers move in to fill the gap, but as these are a low-margin product with a high up-front set-up cost, it is unfortunately unlikely that this will be the case.
