Backyard Bounty all-Tasmanian Vegie box: 13th July

After a final taste of summer with tomatoes and basil last week, this week’s box is a much wintrier affair. Beautifully fresh wombok from Dendra Market Gardens and cauliflowers from Southern fields feature, along with a bumper 160 punnets of delicious mixed gourmet mushrooms from Cygnet Mushroom Farm – at this scale these were grown to order just for you! Whilst mushrooms used to be a seasonal delicacy, these days they’re grown all year round indoors – however, their hearty flavour definitely pairs well with winter veg.

Eating seasonally in winter is also about making the most of produce that grows in the warmer months but stores well – pumpkin, walnuts, onions and potatoes are great examples of this – and of course apples, like the Jonagolds in this week’s box, are able to be kept fresh for months with the aid of modern storage techniques.

Root veg also features prominently, with some lovely golden beetroot from Richmond Farm, along with deliciously sweet Swedes from Kylie and bunched carrots from Dendra Gardens, who have also supplied some lovely spring onions and buk choy this week.
