Small, Regular and Large boxes
Your Backyard Bounty Veggie box will include a selection of seasonally available fresh fruit and veg each week, sourced from our wide variety of Tasmanian growers. No two weeks will be exactly the same – the contents will vary with the seasons, but we also work hard to ensure that there’s plenty of variety from week to week too.
Vegetables are grown year round in Tasmania, and make up the majority of what will be in your box. Potatoes, carrots, beetroot, onions, radish, leafy greens lettuce will be regular inclusions as these are available in all seasons. Brassica – like cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage – are more likely to be in your box in the winter, as are pumpkin, celeriac, swede, celery and parsnip. Tomatoes, capsicum, eggplant and cucumber have an extended season in Tasmania due to the use of hydroponics, but all of these do have a few months of the year they’re not available. Some vegetables have a very short window of availability – e.g. asparagus, zucchini, corn and beans – and we’ll put them in pretty frequently while available if we can. More expensive items – like herbs, parsnips, beans, avocados, spring potatoes and many fruits – are less likely to be included in the small box as the budget for us to buy for you is smaller.
Tasmanian nuts and grains are sometimes included our boxes so please do let us know if you have any applicable allergies or intolerances.
The Tasmanian fruit season is longer than it used to be, largely due to the use of covered growing conditions for berries, but is still relatively short. Apples and pears are picked in autumn and are stored for year-round availability – for about six month of the year these will be the only fruit included in boxes. During summer and autumn a variety of berries are picked – strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries – and these will be included fairly regularly, although less often in the small box as they can be quite expensive. Stonefruit – including cherries, apricots, plums and sometimes peaches and nectarines – are really only available in the summer and often supply is a bit patchy. If you’d like to make the most of the peak fruit season (summer and to some extent autumn) either add our $15 fruit supplement to your order while available, or email about bulk quantities of particular fruits.
Whilst we do choose what goes in your box, we want you to enjoy the experience, so we offer customers the opportunity to nominate fruit and veg they’d prefer not to have in their box. These are then swapped out for something else of roughly equivalent value where applicable. Exclusions need to be requested on the same time-frame as our cancellations and orders – 10 am Monday of the applicable week – but any exclusions that you do nominate will remain on your account until you ask to remove them, so there’s no need to specify every time you order.
