Orders for our all-Tasmanian fruit and veg boxes are now open for September! To place an order, just let us know by email what box type and optional add-ons you’d like on each of the following dates.
If you’re ordering for the first time or you’re changing your delivery/pick-up status you’ll need to specify which of these two options you’d prefer when ordering, along with any items you’d like excluded. New customers are also welcome to order a single box to try the service first, and as an added incentive, delivery (normally $5 extra) is free with your first box. Delivery is available in a wide range of areas, and we also offer third-party delivery to locations in the
Huon and the east coast.
As we move from winter into spring, we enter the period of the seasonal eating calendar known as the “hunger gap” – winter crops are finishing up but spring plantings are yet to come to fruition, and fresh berries are at least a couple of months off. In a temperate climate like Tasmania we’re able to still source heaps of great local produce during this time, but there is certainly a reduction in variety. At times like this it’s great to have heaps of recipes featuring the staple crops that will be included in your boxes most weeks, and that’s why we’re running our first annual “hunger gap games” this September.
The full details of this competition will be released next week, but the basic idea is to share on our page recipes you’ve made using this year’s feature “hunger gap” ingredient – the best recipe wins! This year’s ingredient is the humble pumpkin – harvested in late summer or early autumn, pumpkins come in their own handy impervious skin, storing in the sweet flesh for months at a time with little or no need of refrigeration, so they’re perfect for times when fresh produce is limited! And even better, they’re cheap as, and suit a wide range of flavours, from Asia to Europe to the middle East, all the way from entree to dessert. What’s not to like?
To kick things off in the pumpkin department, we’re also offering Philadelphia Bakers delicious pumpkin loaf for September- infused with mild but fragrant Lebanese seven-spice, and coated with nutty roasted pepitas and sunflower kernels, this is a delicious beast. $8.5 will get you a sizeable round of moist, fluffy pumpkin sourdough, and it’s probably one of the five serves of vegetables you’re supposed to be eating too… Corey’s using the same pumpkins from Charlie’s pumpkins (pictured above) that we’re supplying in our boxes to make this truly local product – consider this the first entry in the hunger gap games!
Please email backyardbounty.vegiebox@gmail.com to order for September or for any enquiries, and we’ll get back to you soon!
