Backyard Bounty all-Tasmanian Vegie box: 26th May

It’s feijoa season! Acca sellowiana is another import from the “new world”, and is the last cab off the rank in the fruit season, actually requiring a period of cold weather to set fruit. Feijoas – like avocados – are widely cultivated in New Zealand –but the Tasmanian climate is also ideal for a plant that is at its most productive when not exposed to either heavy frost or extreme summer heat. The best way to enjoy a feijoa – which has an outer layer of melon-like opaque flesh, and translucent jelly-like pockets inside where the seeds are stored – is to peel the bitter skin off, but if you’re in a hurry (or if you’re whatever the N.Z. equivalent of Crocodile Dundee is) you can bite the top off, spit it out, and squeeze the still-beating flesh into your famished maw…

We’ve also received our first hazelnuts of the season from Huon Hazelnuts, which are heading out to our $30 and $35 boxes this week. We’ll also include these in the $20 and $40 boxes here and there, but we won’t be including them in the budget boxes as they’re not on the list for inclusion. If you’re a real nut for nuts, don’t panic – we’re offering both hazelnuts and walnuts as an optional box add-on for the next few months! Grown for Taste are back on board with more of their specialties this week – including some very pretty Bora King Radish, which are a relation to Daikon and can be used for similar applications, but have a lovely purple hue. This week’s $40 and $25 customers are lucky enough to have cauliflower from Harvest Moon, which is thankfully starting to drop in price again after another recent spike.
