Orders for our June all-Tasmanian produce boxes are now open!

Orders for our all-Tasmanian fruit and veg boxes are now open for June! To place an order, just let us know by email (backyardbounty.vegiebox@gmail.com) what box type and optional add-ons you’d like on each of the following dates. If you’re ordering for the first time or you’re changing your delivery/pick-up status you’ll need to specify which of these two options you’d prefer when ordering. New customers are also welcome to order a single box to try the service first, and as an added incentive, delivery (normally $5 extra) is free with your first box.

June is the official start of winter, and whilst the cooler weather and shorter days mean plants grow slower, it’s still a time of abundance in the seasonal eating calendar. Root vegetables – like carrot, beetroot, swede and celeriac – are a versatile winter staple, as is the humble spud, which thanks to our tame potato farmer John comes in a wonderful array of varieties, each with their own unique culinary properties and appearance. Leafy greens are also at their best – the cool air resulting in sweeter leaves – and delicious brassica like cauliflower, broccoli and Brussels sprouts are in their element. Apples and pears remain crisp and fresh for the next few months in carefully monitored storage conditions, and June also sees the peak season for the uniquely fragrant feijoa, so enamoured of by our neighbours in the land of the long white cloud.

To add even more variety to your winter diet, we’re continuing to expand our range of optional box add-ons – this month we’re introducing two new lines from Manna Bakehouse (grain loaf and bagels), a range of products from Healthy Treats by Mrs Rees (these cater for a wide range of food intolerances and allergies, and full ingredients lists are available on their website), and also Native pepper from Diemen Pepper – a great way to spice up your slow-cooked winter dishes.

Avocados and strawberries are now finished for the season; in their place we’re offering walnuts and hazelnuts as optional extras at very competitive prices. June will be the last month that we’ll offer saucing tomatoes from Cracknell’s, so if you want to have a stash of frozen tomatoes for your winter cooking or simply make that batch of relish you’d been meaning to but hadn’t gotten around to, now’s a great time to do it. We also have a whole range of other bulk buy options listed on our website – you don’t need to order a box to buy these, and we can deliver these while we’re out and about on Fridays for the same delivery fee as a standard box. If there’s something you’d like a bulk order of that’s not listed, we’re happy to see what we can do to source it for you.

Please email backyardbounty.vegiebox@gmail.com to order for June or for any enquiries, and we’ll get back to you on Saturday and Sunday after the weekly Thursday-Friday packing and delivering madness is over!
